How Do Traditional Braces Work?
Traditional braces apply gentle force to the teeth in order to shift them into their proper places. They do so via brackets, which are bonded onto the teeth, and a wire that connects the brackets together. At periodic visits to our office, the wire gets replaced so the braces can continue to apply the needed force to your teeth. The average total treatment time with braces is 1 – 3 years.
What Orthodontic Issues Can Braces Fix?
Braces are one of the most reliable forms of orthodontic treatment. In fact, they can address a wide range of dental alignment issues, including severe and complex cases. Here is a brief overview of some of the problems that braces are often used to correct:
Bite Misalignment
Overbite, underbite, crossbite, and open bite are common forms of malocclusion. Without treatment, such issues can lead to TMJ problems, dental damage, and more. Braces can correct most cases of malocclusion by gently repositioning the teeth and training the jaws to work in harmony with one another. Often, braces accomplish this with the help of additional accessories like small rubber bands.
Crowded & Crooked Teeth
Crowded and overlapping teeth are difficult to clean, which puts you at risk of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Your speech and appearance may also be negatively affected. Braces, perhaps along with one or more strategic tooth extractions, can shift the teeth in a way that gives each one the space it needs to function optimally.
Gapped Teeth
Large gaps between your teeth can leave your gums vulnerable to irritation and harm. They may also cause you to be self-conscious about your appearance. Fortunately, braces are often able to move the teeth closer together. This can improve your bite, enhance your appearance, and lead to other significant benefits.
Caring for Your Braces
It is important to make minor adjustments to your routine in order to care properly for your braces. You should:
- Be extra-diligent about oral hygiene. A floss threader, interdental brushes, or a WaterPik can help you clean around the brackets and wires.
- Be mindful of what you eat. Certain foods, such as tough and chewy items, may damage your braces. Our team can provide detailed guidance on what to eat (and what to avoid) during your treatment.
- Attend all recommended appointments. This helps to keep your teeth’s progress on track.
