How Phase 1 Orthodontics Works
Phase 1 orthodontic treatment is all about guiding the growth of the oral structures. It uses custom appliances to address issues like narrow jaws, overcrowding, bite misalignment, and more.
Treatment usually starts when a child is 7 – 9 years of age. Around this stage, they should have a mix of baby teeth and permanent teeth. Their jaws and facial structure are also still developing, so their growth can be guided with specialized gear. For example, a palatal expander can create more space in the upper dental arch. Limited braces may be used to address dental misalignment. Space maintainers can be used to keep a spot open for incoming adult teeth in areas where the baby teeth were lost too soon.
Usually, Phase 1 treatment lasts 9 – 12 months.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Phase 1 Orthodontics?
To find out for sure if your child is a good candidate for Phase 1 orthodontics, bring them to our office so Dr. Hoggan can evaluate the positioning of their teeth and the mechanics of their bite. Then, we can discuss next steps.
Getting an evaluation is important for every child, but it is especially vital if your little one is showing signs of an orthodontic problem. Look out for these signs:
- Crowded, overlapping teeth
- Unusually large gaps between the teeth
- A noticeable underbite or overbite
- Impacted teeth (teeth that do not fully emerge from the gumline)
- Unhealthy non-nutritive habits, such as excessive use of a pacifier
- Breathing difficulties (frequent mouth breathing or snoring during sleep)
The Benefits of Phase 1 Orthodontics
Phase 1 orthodontics offers many benefits, including:
- Functional Improvements: After treatment, your child may find it easier to bite, chew, and breathe.
- Reduced Need for Future Treatment: Phase 1 care may make future orthodontic treatment less extensive and less complex. It might even eliminate the need for surgical intervention.
- Aesthetic Improvements: Treatment may help to balance your child’s facial features and reduce any self-consciousness they have about their appearance.
- Better Oral Health: Orthodontic treatment can make it easier for kids to maintain excellent oral hygiene and reduce the risk of issues like broken or prematurely worn teeth.
