What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?
A filling is a treatment that we use to address areas of mild to moderate decay. It stops the decay from spreading, fortifies the tooth structure, and reduces painful dental sensitivity. Old-fashioned fillings are made of silver amalgam, which contains around 50% mercury.
Tooth-colored fillings, on the other hand, are completely metal-free. They are made of a biocompatible composite resin that we can shade-match so it blends in beautifully with the surrounding dentition.
The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling
The process of getting a tooth-colored filling is fast and surprisingly comfortable. We will likely start the process by numbing the area of your mouth where we will work. Next, we carefully remove decayed tissue from the cavity and insert the resin. We harden the resin with a special curing light and then adjust the filling so it sits flush against the surface of your teeth. The goal is to make it look and feel as natural as possible.
Depending on how many fillings you need, the process will likely take less than one hour. Your treated tooth may be sensitive for several days after your appointment, but normal eating and drinking habits should not interfere with the filling’s success.
The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings
Tooth-colored fillings are pretty amazing! Not only do they look beautiful, but they also provide a number of practical and health-related benefits:
- No metal: If you are sensitive to metals or concerned about the toxic potential of mercury, you can rest assured that tooth-colored fillings are safe for you.
- Minimal temperature reactivity: Metal fillings expand and contract in response to temperature changes, which can stress the surrounding tooth structure. Tooth-colored fillings are less reactive and less likely to cause damage.
- Reduced sensitivity: Metal effectively conducts temperatures, which can cause sensitivity. In contrast, tooth-colored fillings do not cause a long-term increase in sensitivity.
- Less leakage: Metal fillings sit inside a tooth, while tooth-colored fillings actually bond to the surrounding dentition. This reduces the risk of leakage.
- Durability: With proper care, tooth-colored fillings can easily last for several years.
