What Are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars, which are located at the very back of the mouth. Most people develop four of them, though this number can vary. They tend to appear a bit later in life than the other teeth, typically when a person is in their teens. Wisdom teeth were necessary for our ancient human ancestors, but they have become vestigial in modern times.

Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?

Wisdom teeth do not always need to be removed, but they do carry a risk of certain problems simply because there is not enough room in the mouth for them to function properly. For example, they can become impacted (stuck fully or partially beneath the gumline). This can lead to issues like pain, infections, cysts, tumors, and more. These teeth can even move other teeth out of alignment as they try to erupt from the gums.

If you are experiencing pain or other issues that you suspect may be related to your wisdom teeth, we encourage you to visit us for an examination. We can determine if extractions would be the best step for your oral health.

What to Expect from the Wisdom Teeth Procedure

If you need to get your wisdom teeth removed, you can expect a fairly easy procedure. We will numb your mouth and may administer sedation to keep you comfortable. Once you are settled in, we will work on removing the teeth. If they are impacted, we may have to create incisions in your gums or even cut the teeth into pieces in order to fully remove them. After we finish, we will place sutures, and you can go home to start healing.
