How Dental Insurance Works
Every dental insurance policy is unique, so we encourage you to review the details of your plan in order to understand how it works.
Many of the plans we see in our office are PPO plans. These allow you to use your benefits at any practice, and their coverage structure often looks something like this:
- Preventive services may be up to 100% covered.
- Basic services may be around 80% covered.
- Major services are often up to 50% covered.
- Dental implants, orthodontia, and other specialty services are only covered by select premium plans. They might be up to 50% covered.
Keep in mind that dental insurance plans also commonly come with an annual limit on the value of benefits; deductibles that must be paid before the benefits kick in; and waiting periods before you can use specific benefits.
Financing & Flexible Payments
Remember that many treatments, including dental implants, orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry, and full smile restorations, may not be fully covered by insurance. To help make care more accessible, we offer flexible financing and payment options that allow you to spread treatment costs over time.
What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?
Oral health is a key part of overall health, so at first, it may seem odd that dental and medical insurance are different entities. Historically, these facets of care have always been viewed as separate by the majority of the healthcare community.
Medical insurance is designed to support your systemic health. You can use it for preventive checkups with your PCP, emergency situations, and management of chronic diseases. It does not cover basic oral care services.
Dental insurance has a strong focus on prevention and does cover basic oral care services.
In some cases, there is a bit of overlap between dental and medical insurance. For example, they both might apply to certain types of oral surgery.
In-Network vs. Out-of-Network
Most insurance plans come with a network, or a group of doctors with whom they have a contract that controls certain aspects of their relationship. If you have a non-PPO plan (such as an HMO), you may be required to stay in-network. But with a PPO plan, you have a lot more freedom.
Our practice is proud to welcome both in-network and out-of-network patients.
In-Network Coverage
If we are in-network with your insurance, you can generally expect lower out-of-pocket fees and higher coverage levels than you would at an out-of-network provider. We are proud to be in-network with many popular companies, including:
- Delta Dental
- Cigna
- MetLife
- UnitedHealthcare
- United Concordia
- Anthem
- GEHA
- Aetna
Out-of-Network Coverage
Even if we are out of your network, you can still use your PPO plan in our office! We will be happy to file claims on your behalf, help you understand how much you owe out-of-pocket, and more. Many patients are pleasantly surprised by the amount they can save even when they go outside their network. Remember, the most important thing is to choose a dentist whom you trust to care for your smile, regardless of their network status.
No Insurance?
What if you do not have insurance at all? Even if you do not have dental insurance, quality care is still within your reach! Our team will help you explore payment solutions and create a treatment plan that fits your goals, timeline, and budget.
Dental Insurance FAQs
Should I Choose a Dentist Based Solely on My Insurance Plan?
We don't believe your insurance company should determine the quality of dental care you receive. Many patients who visit Landmark Dental Studio are looking for a long-term dental home where they feel comfortable, heard, and confident in the treatment they receive. While insurance can help offset costs, our focus is always on recommending the care that is best for your oral health and overall well-being, not simply what your insurance plan covers.
Why Do So Many Greenwood Village Professionals Choose an Out-of-Network Dentist?
Many of our patients work in the Denver Tech Center or live in Greenwood Village, Cherry Creek, and surrounding communities. They often choose their healthcare providers based on trust, experience, technology, convenience, and patient experience rather than network status alone. Depending on your plan, you may still have valuable out-of-network benefits that can help offset treatment costs while allowing you to receive care from the dentist of your choice.
Can Landmark Dental Studio Help Me Find Out What My Dental Insurance Actually Covers?
Dental insurance can be confusing, especially since coverage often varies between preventive, restorative, cosmetic, and implant-related procedures. Our team is happy to help verify your benefits and explain what your plan may contribute toward treatment. We believe patients should fully understand their options before making important decisions about their dental health.
What If My Insurance Doesn't Cover the Treatment You Recommend?
Many of the treatments patients most often ask about, including dental implants, orthodontics, cosmetic dentistry, and full smile restorations, may not be fully covered by insurance. If that happens, our Landmark Dental Studio team can discuss the financing and payment options we offer to help make treatment more manageable. Our goal is to help you move forward with the care you need, rather than delay treatment due to insurance limitations.
Why Doesn't Dental Insurance Cover Everything?
Sadly, most dental insurance plans were designed to cover preventive and basic restorative care, not necessarily the full cost of modern dentistry. In fact, you may be surprised to learn that many annual maximums have changed very little over the past several decades despite rising healthcare costs. Because of this, many patients view dental insurance as a helpful benefit rather than a complete payment solution.
Can You Help Me Understand My Benefits Before I Start Treatment?
Absolutely. One of the most valuable services our Landmark Dental Studio administrative team provides is helping patients understand their benefits before treatment begins. We can review your coverage, discuss estimated benefits, and explain potential out-of-pocket costs so you can make informed decisions with confidence.
What Happens If I Don't Use All My Dental Benefits This Year?
Most dental insurance plans have annual maximums that reset at the end of the calendar year. In many cases, unused benefits do not roll over into the following year. If you've been delaying recommended treatment, preventive care, or restorative work, it may make sense to utilize your remaining benefits before they expire. Our Greenwood Village team can help you determine whether treatment timing could help maximize your available coverage.
Does Landmark Dental Studio Offer Options for Patients Without Insurance?
Yes. Many of our patients either do not have dental insurance or choose to receive care outside of their insurance network. We offer flexible payment and financing options designed to help patients prioritize their oral health without compromising on quality care. Whether you need routine preventive treatment or a more comprehensive smile restoration, we'll help you find a path forward that fits your goals and budget.
